The Fast Recovery Area (FRA) is an Oracle-managed storage location used for recovery-related files, including archived redo logs, flashback logs, control file copies, and RMAN backups. FRA Usage % measures how much of the configured Fast Recovery Area storage is being used.
When FRA utilization approaches its configured capacity, Oracle may be unable to generate additional archived redo logs or store recovery files. This can interrupt database operations, particularly when the database is running in ARCHIVELOG mode and cannot archive redo logs because the destination is full.
Symptoms:
FRA utilization is approaching or reaching its configured capacity. Oracle may report errors related to archiving redo logs, such as ORA-19809 (limit exceeded for recovery files) or ORA-00257 (archiver error). Depending on the database configuration, this may prevent transactions from proceeding until sufficient space becomes available.
Impact: High
A full Fast Recovery Area can interfere with critical database operations. If Oracle cannot archive redo logs, database activity may become blocked, potentially preventing users and applications from completing transactions. Recovery operations may also be affected if there is insufficient space to store required recovery files.
Expected behavior:
FRA utilization varies according to database activity, redo generation rates, backup schedules, flashback configuration, and the retention policies governing recovery files.
Usage may increase temporarily during periods of heavy transaction activity or before scheduled backup and cleanup operations. Oracle can reclaim eligible files when space is needed, according to its configured policies and file requirements. However, files that are still required for recovery or are otherwise ineligible for deletion cannot necessarily be removed automatically.
Investigate sustained high utilization, rapid increases in FRA usage, or situations where Oracle cannot reclaim sufficient space. Pay particular attention to the available free space, archived redo log generation rate, backup and cleanup status, and the configured FRA size. Ensure that enough space remains available to support normal database operations and the required recovery strategy.
Possible causes of FRA Usage alerts
- High archived redo log generation: Heavy transaction activity or bulk data operations generate large volumes of redo logs.
- RMAN backup accumulation: Backup files and other recovery-related files occupy FRA space longer than expected.
- Archived logs not being backed up or deleted: Backup failures or retention policies prevent eligible archived logs from being reclaimed.
- Flashback logs consuming space: Flashback Database configuration and workload generate flashback logs that use a significant portion of the FRA.
- Insufficient FRA capacity: The configured FRA size is too small for the database’s workload, backup requirements, and recovery retention policies.
